UNHCR

The International Refugee Organization was created on 1 July 1947, at which time the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and the Inter-Governmental Committee on Refugees terminated. During the period from July 1947 until August 1948, the IRO activity was handled by a Preparatory Commission of IRO (PCIRO). The IRO was a nonpermanent Specialized Agency of the United Nations. It was liquidated on 28 February 1952. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it had about ninety branch offices throughout the world.

United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945.  It is currently made up of 193 Member States.  The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN system, also known unofficially as the ‘UN family’, is made up of the UN itself and many programmes, funds, and specialized agencies, all with their own leadership and budget.  The programmes and funds are financed through voluntary rather than assessed contributions. The Specialized Agencies are independent international organizations funded by both voluntary and assessed contributions.

UNESCO

UNESCO works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’s mission and activities.
